9th Grade
Students may choose to follow a curriculum guide designed by a Springs Charter School English Specialist for English 1. Students using the SCS Curriculum Guide for English 1 will complete the following units:
Short Story Unit
- Of Mice and Men Novel Unit
- Research Writing Unit
- Poetry Unit
- Persuasive Writing Unit
- To Kill a Mockingbird Novel Unit
- Epic Poetry Unit
- Romeo and Juliet Drama Unit
- Independent Reading Multimedia Project
The units developed for the SCS Curriculum Guides include assignments that support the Common Core State Standards in the following areas:
- Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension
- Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research
- Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration
- Language: Conventions, effective use, and vocabulary

Prentice Hall–Timeless Voice, Timeless Themes (Gold Level)
Core Literature:
Students are expected to read core literature at SCS. If students are using the SCS Curriculum Guides, core literature is included in the guides. Students not using the SCS Curriculum Guides will need to read one of three novel choices and one play. English 1 students will read one of the following novels: To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice & Men or The Hobbit . All English 1 students will read Romeo and Juliet. Students are expected to use core literature for their essay responses on the proctored final exams.
10th Grade

- All Quiet on the Western Front Novel Unit

- Multi Genre Research Paper
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Novel Study
- Poetry
- The Great Gatsby – Novel Study
- The Grapes of Wrath – Novel Study
- A Lesson Before Dying – Novel Study
- The House on Mango Street – Short Stories

Students are expected to read core literature at SCS. If students are using the SCS Curriculum Guides, core literature is included in the guides. Students not using the SCS Curriculum Guide will need to read two of the four novels and one play. English 3 students will choose from the following novels: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath or A Lesson Before Dying. All English 3 students will read The Crucible. Students are expected to use core literature for their essay responses on the proctored final exams.
12th Grade
