The Otay Ranch Student Center held its annual APEX fundraiser netting more than $15,000 for school technology, reported Vice Principal Melissa Maguire. The fundraiser kicked off with a pep rally, followed by two weeks of character-building lessons and students collecting pledges for a culminating fun run. Springs’ SPREEs (Student – Parent Regional Educational Events), “make it-take it” educational workshops for grades TK-8, have been a huge success for the Homeschool community, reported Nikki McAdoo, events and community engagement coordinator. Six SPREES were held in September and October (Chula Vista, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Riverside, Orange County, and Cherry Valley) with over 100 parents and students attending.

Springs iShine Student Center participated in Pink Out Day in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. TK-K students also enjoyed a visit to Peltzer’s Farm’s pumpkin patch. And, representatives from Toyota donated 400 backpacks and school supplies to the school.

Journey Home School High School 12th-grade student Nicole Hudson has written, illustrated, and self-published Wear Your Crown, a children’s book which encourages children to embrace their curls from a young age and was inspired by the author’s childhood wish for a book celebrating curly hair.

The Murrieta Student Center (MSC) back-to-school night was a success, reported Virginia Diaz, the program coordinator. It was the first such event at the site, and nearly every family in the school turned out. The school’s ASB raised funds by selling drinks and snacks, with funds to be used to pay the expenses of school dances.

Venture Online students Adalyn and Alayah Carter work as background talent for television programs. At age four, their mother signed them with Kids! Management, which describes itself as “the premiere background management company in Hollywood focused on coordinating the needs of casting directors [of minor children to] work on set as background talent for the entertainment industry.”
