Thirty-four high school students from Magnolia Student Center and Renaissance Valley Academy traveled to CalTrans in San Bernardino to learn about careers with CalTrans, reported Maureen Roye, director of CITE. CalTrans created a “career fair” atmosphere, she said, and students were able to talk with CalTrans staff from its different departments such as maintenance, construction, material testing, real estate, drone flying, and planning.
Springs Career Technical Education (CTE) students from multiple programs traveled to the Ontario International Airport to learn about career and job opportunities associated with an international airport, reported Maureen Roye, director of Career Internship Technical Education (CITE). She explained, “Like most large airports, ONT is in itself a little city, so there are many opportunities for CTE students to find interesting and successful careers.”
Springs students Grace Dwinnell, Jeremy Marten, Joshua Ortiz, Anais Park and Lily Sharp are competing in CyberPatriot’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, the world’s largest cybersecurity competition, reported Maureen Roye, director of CTE.
Inez Valencia, Springs CTE Introduction to Photography and Digital Art and Design Teacher, won first place for a chalk art image of the Joker from the cover of the 1988 graphic novel “Batman: The Killing Joke” painted on the street for the Temecula Art & Street Painting Festival. She chose the image because “I am a fan of the Joker because of his dark humor. I was inspired by the comic cover ‘The Killing Joke’ because he holds a camera and I teach photography. I chose to not include the hat from Bolland’s original because the hair is more vibrant.” Continue reading
Parsec Cloud, Inc. is making their Parsec for Teams software available for free to schools for the 2020-21 school year. The software facilitates remote teaching of graphics-heavy subjects by providing an optimal connection between the school’s computers and remote students at home, regardless of their hardware. It normally costs users $30/month, but an epic MegaGrant will cover the cost.
Springs CTE teacher Chris Allen has won a $25,000 Epic MegaGrant for developing tutorials from Unreal Engine, an open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool. He has taught CTE Intro and Intermediate Game Design since 2015, creating his own curriculum in Canvas. Unreal Engine was developed by Epic Games, makers of the popular online video game Fortnite. The tutorials which Mr. Allen will be developing are the same tutorials he uses in his courses. Continue reading
Photographer Daniel Rubio, a Springs alumnus, made a presentation on photography to students in Springs’ Career Internship Technical Education (CITE) pathway at the Pathfinder Student Center.
