Parsec Cloud, Inc. is making their Parsec for Teams software available for free to schools for the 2020-21 school year. The software facilitates remote teaching of graphics-heavy subjects by providing an optimal connection between the school’s computers and remote students at home, regardless of their hardware. It normally costs users $30/month, but an epic MegaGrant will cover the cost.
Springs CTE Game Design Teacher Chris Allen is among the teachers using Parsec for Teams. He said, “My class is mostly Unreal Engine and 3D modeling, which requires decent computers to run the software. At first, I was just going to change my whole class to be more of a game theory type of class, but that didn’t seem fair to the students.”
He gathered up the 30+ computers the students would ordinarily use on campus, put them in a central warehouse, and set them all up to work with Parsec. “At first, I was skeptical that it would run smoothly enough for students that have slow internet at home,” he continued, “but to my pleasant surprise, there have been no issues at all.”
He added that he appreciates being able to help students directly through remote access. “With Parsec, I can click into any computer that a student is using and directly help them by taking control and showing them what to do.”
