Journey Homeschool High School students enjoyed a visit from animation screenwriters and Emmy award winners Doug and Candie Langdale whose credits include Scooby-Doo, Book of Life, and Darkwing Duck. They talked about their careers, obstacles, and how to become a screenwriter. Doug said, “The main goal is to practice writing if you want to become a writer.

Mia Harris, 5, a Kindergarten student at Springs’ Rancho Cucamonga Student Center who lives in Ontario, is the November 2024 Student Artist of the Month. She likes to draw fictional characters such as unicorns and cartoons as well as her parents. She also likes playing piano and singing, dancing, T-ball, Minecraft, and Roblox. She hopes one day to be a professional ballerina or police officer.

Learning Center programs are “booming,” reported Homeschool Director Lori Loucks, with 1,800 Homeschool students taking classes, the highest amount ever. Center staff was able to increase class offerings at six sites and “the year has been off to a great start with successful meet & greet events and a month of great hands-on learning.” Class offerings include Oceanography, Legion of Legos, Celebration of Books, Magnificent Mathematicians, Guitar, and Sign Language.

Springs Homeschool held its annual math extravaganza with 179 students and 113 parents participating, reported Nikkole McAdoo, Springs’ events and community engagement coordinator. This interactive event, facilitated by the Homeschool staff, focused on play-based learning and encouraged students to explore math concepts through creativity and perseverance rather than relying on memorized formulas or procedures.

Sixty 8th grade students attended Springs’ three-day Boojum Leadership Adventure at Idyllwild Pines Camp, reported Nikkole McAdoo, events and community engagement coordinator. Participants had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities aimed at honing their leadership abilities. They challenged themselves with a variety of team-building activities, including a ropes course featuring a progression of initiative problems, challenges, and trust activities designed to help students develop positive peer relationships, cooperation, leadership, and increased self-confidence and self-esteem.

Journey Homeschool High School ES Summer Knapp (right) received a Crystal Apple Award from the LDS Church in Hemet in recognition for the positive impact she has made in her profession. She was nominated by her student Lily Herterich, who described Summer as “amazing.” Lily remarked, “She has been so important to me throughout high school, and I’m looking forward to spending senior year with her.”
