Build a Better School System

The following commentary is adapted from a speech Kathleen Hermsmeyer delivered at the end of September:

 Over the past seven months, the landscape of education has changed dramatically. You could say that we’ve all jumped from the education superhighway to the road less traveled.  Many innovative educational ideas have been implemented in a hurry out of necessity.  It’s been said that real change takes place in deep crisis. The question at this point is: what’s going to stick around in public education after the pandemic is over?

Magnolia Senior Participates in Virtual Summit

September 16, 2020

Armando Villanueva, 16, a senior with Springs’ Renaissance Real World Academy at the Magnolia Student Center, participated in a Fund All Kids Virtual Youth Summit with three other charter school students. Their topic was California SB-98, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, which restricts 2020-21 growth by capping funding for charter schools such as Springs. Armando explained, “We talked about the impact SB-98 will have on students all across California. We spoke about our dreams after school, and how we as seniors wanted to ensure that our underclassmen had the same opportunity we had to fulfill those dreams.”

RVA Prepares for ELL Parent Meetings

Springs Charter Schools is holding our 5th Annual Student Art Contest – open to all Springs students!
The artwork should showcase our theme for the 2020-21 school year, Calling All Springs Heroes.

Cherry Valley R.A.D. Week to Promote Emotional Health

September 15, 2020

Students in Springs’ Cherry Valley Homeschool Cooperative participated in an interactive R.A.D. Week in which students were guided through Social Emotional Learning activities aimed to Reduce Anxiety and Depression. “Our goal,” said Assistant Director Tammy Slaten, “is to build the grit necessary and the positive coping skills needed for our students to thrive in today’s learning environments.”

Springs Opens San Fernando Valley Center

September 9, 2020

Springs’ San Fernando Valley Personalized Learning Center has opened for the new school year serving 39 students grades K-6. Students are attending virtually, and will return to in-person learning at a San Fernando Valley site as state restrictions on in-person instruction are lifted.

Construction Underway at New Palm Academy Facility

August 18, 2020

Construction is underway at Springs’ Palm Academy’s new facility, reported Shawna Lewis, who is serving as principal for both Palm Academy and the Del Rio Student Center.  Most recently, food services visited the site to map out the kitchen floor plan, and the facilities team visited to assess progress.

Albertsons Gives Springs a $10,000 Grant for Meals

August 18, 2020

The Albertsons Companies Foundation gave Springs a $10,000 “Nourishing Neighbors” grant to help provide meals for the needy in the community.  Springs serves breakfast and lunch to students in need at selected sites as part of its participation in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.  The grant funds will be used to pay for food, as well as transportation and PPE for staff members distributing food.

Corona Student Center Welcomes New Staff

August 14, 2020

The Corona Student Center welcomed a new 2nd/3rd teacher, Kayla Kubo.  She received her teaching credential and masters in teaching from California Baptist University; before coming to the Center she taught reading and writing interventions with students grades TK-2nd grade.  Other new staff includes site facilitator Morgan Ford and custodian Andy Walker.
