Taking Such Classes Can Be a Benefit to Students, Says Director of High School Programs
Beverly Voechting, Springs’ director of high school programs, reports that there has been a “huge” increase in the number of college courses taken by Springs high school students this school year. Last year, Springs High School students took 135 classes online from Barstow Community College as compared to 425 in the present year. Eighty-one percent of Springs students pass their classes, as compared to 75% of college-aged students.
Springs High School students can work towards an Associate of Arts degree beginning in their 9th-grade year. Degrees are offered in Liberal Studies and Social Science. There are 31 dual enrollment courses that Barstow Community College has agreed to allow Springs students to take online. Springs students receive priority registration and are supported by College and Career Coordinator Kathy Crudo. The courses completed can count toward college and high school graduation in either the core subjects or post-secondary areas.
Beverly strongly recommends Springs high school students consider college as an option now. Classes and textbooks are free to Springs students, and they can get a head start on a college degree.
