It was my great pleasure to participate in a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for our new Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center. This facility houses our new Discovery Co-LAB-orative Program for grades TK-8 and U-Lab program for high school students. These two programs meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and currently serve 75 students. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the program serves 170 Homeschool students who participate in learning center classes. (For a brief introduction, click here.)
Principal Colette Bozek led the ceremony, with students, staff, board members and parents in attendance. I very much agree with the sentiments Colette shared with those of us gathered, including her comment, “Every child deserves radically personalized learning that meets his or her needs and follows his or her own interests. We will continue the Springs mission to radically change the learning landscape and put learning with the child at the center.” She described the Center’s teachers as “guides and facilitators,” and said that their role was to support each student, “figuring out what motivates him or her and then in pursuing those interests in meaningful and authentic ways while continuing to discover new interests.”
A special feature of the Rancho Cucamonga facility is a “maker-space,” a place where students can explore their special interests and participate in hands-on projects. It was my special honor to participate in the ceremony, as the maker-space was named “Kane’s Construction” in memory of my mother, Dorothy Kane, an avid supporter of Springs who passed away a year ago. My brother, John Kane, participated in the ceremony. On behalf of my family, I extend my special thanks to all involved.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathleen Hermsmeyer
Superintendent
