Did you know that taking a test can actually help you learn?
Roddy Roediger, a psychology professor at Washington University in St. Louis who runs the school’s Memory Lab, has spoken about the so-called “testing effect” or “retrieval practice” benefits of those who study for tests. While many people think of the human memory as a box to be packed with information, he said, “What people neglected and didn’t think about was the ‘getting it out’ part. We don’t get information into memory just to have it sit there. We get it in to be able to use it later … And the actual act of retrieving the information over and over, that’s what makes it retrievable when you need it.” (Read more here and here.)
As annual state testing begins for our students, I’d ask our school community to reflect on the research-proven benefits of regular testing: it aids our children in the retention of information. As a public charter school, we are given the freedom to provide an alternative educational program to our students, but in exchange, we are required to assess our students using the same standardized tests as traditional public schools. Many times parents think of the time spent testing as lost educational hours, but studies have shown that such tests can be an effective aid to learning. Preparing for and taking tests can produce a better recall of facts, and a deeper understanding of the material studied. (Read more here and here.)
Additionally, our collective test scores reflect how successful the Springs’ educational program is. Strong test scores demonstrate that our programs are effective and benefit our students. And, since three of Springs’ four charters are up for renewal this upcoming year, our students’ collective success will favorably influence those who approve our charters.
