Mariah Shipp, a Citrus Springs Homeschool kindergartener, is the student artist of the month for June. She likes to draw animals, anime, and video game characters. She uses pencil, markers, and acrylic, her favorite, because she can make new colors. When not creating art, Mariah enjoys piano, violin, karate, video games, and fishing.

The Classical Community of Orange County at the Santa Ana Learning Center, serving approximately 170 students, recently hosted its first history festival of the school year, reported Linda Larson, homeschool director. This year’s focus is early American history, and all classes spent the fall studying the diverse regions of Native American peoples—exploring their clothing, local resources, homes, and art. Teacher Mary Hering, who has served students at the Santa Ana Learning Center since 2010, has retired, reported Marla Martindale, director of learning centers. Mrs. Hering taught art, musical theater, and literature; classes performed musicals and plays such as James and the Giant Peach, Aladdin, and musical medleys which introduced students to musical hits on Broadway.
