Students Participate in Three School-wide Competitions

Springs held three school-wide competitions in this past month.  On January 11, Springs held its History Day Competition and Science Fair Invitational, and on January 17, Springs held its Spelling Bee Invitational.  


History Day drew 10 students with 17 projects entered. Winners at the Elementary Level were 1st, Jack Hitchcock (The Bessemer Process), 2nd, Levi Uribe (The Battle at Valley Forge) and 3rd, Gemma Garcia (Women in Sports).  Junior Division: 1st, Claire Gatpandah, 2nd, Bella Yerigan (Dr. Christiaan Barnard and how his heart transplant turned the face of medicine) and 3rd, Brielle Sande-Baldrick and Makaela Daniel (The JFK Assassination).  All six advanced to countywide competitions.Thanks to teachers James Weck, Bear River, and Jess McIntyre, Pathfinder Homeschool Collaborative, for their support of this event.

The Science Fair drew 18 students who submitted nine science and six engineering projects. Eight will advance to countywide competitions. Winners included 1st, Kaelyn Lutz, 4th grade Homeschool student, for her project on praying mantises.  Luke Bryson, 5th grade Homeschool student, took 1st for his engineering project creating a Lego zipline. Chloe Dreier and Ava Chaves from Bear River were first in the junior division for their “Popping Pearls” project and Justin Merino from the Riverside Student Center had the 1st place engineering project “Global Warning Solution.” Other winners were Lemuel Espinoza and Noah Ramirez, Bear River, 2nd for science, and Abram Almanza, 2nd for engineering, Profess Adhikari and Marcus Larios from Bear River, 3rd place science, and Homeschool student Emily Carroll, 3rd, science.

Special thanks to Bear River teachers Paige Davis and James Weck for encouraging students to participate and assisting with judging. And, we had 42 students compete in our Spelling Bee Invitational with 150 family members in attendance.  It took 16 rounds to declare a winner, as 7th graders Profess Adhikari from Bear River Student Center and Afiyah Ashrafi from Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center went head to head with Profess ultimately prevailing. Profess will represent Springs at the Riverside County level and Afiyah at the San Bernardino level.

Also advancing to the county level are Hunter Brooks, 8th grade, Temecula Student Center, Katherine Odell, 7th grade, Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center, Berlin Perez, 8th grade, Homeschool and Cameron Arcilla, Homsechool.
