Audry Elkins, age 6, has been learning to speak Spanish at La Fuente Academy, a Springs dual language Spanish-English school in Oceanside.
Her family selected the school, she said, because they wanted her to learn Spanish. Audry said, “Spanish was very hard, but now I know how to count to 100 in Spanish.”
She likes learning the alphabet and reading, as well as coloring and drawing. She also likes to help kids who are new to the school. She said, “I have learned to help people by running over and asking [in Spanish], ‘Are you OK?’ At first, I didn’t know how to do that.” She’s also been advertising La Fuente to her friends: “I tell them about how good La Fuente is, and that they should come if they are old enough. They’ll learn Spanish; the school is a great place to learn different languages.” She’s looking forward to starting the 1st grade in the new school year.
Away from school, Audry likes swinging on her tire swing and planting a vegetable garden with her mother. She recently built a cardboard dollhouse with her dad. She added, “My dad and I want to build a cool robot doll that has a TV in her forehead so when she sees something it makes a whole picture about her dreams.” She said that her dad is her hero because “he can pick me up without dropping me, helps me when I need help and because he is a nice person.” Her mom is also special, too, “because she always wears a pretty necklace and a pretty shirt, and her shoes go well with her pants. I love my mom because she is nice and I can see how she loves me so much, hugging me and kissing me.” When she grows up, her dream is to be a street singer. Two things few people know about her, she said, are that “I can run almost as fast as boys, and I can learn things really, really fast.”
