Sarah Quinton, a 5th-grade Assistant Classroom Educator (and 2013 Springs graduate) at the Temecula Student Center, saved a male student choking on food during lunch by making use of the Heimlich Maneuver, reported Ben Taylor, principal.
The safety training the staff received along with her quick action, he said, “saved a life!” Jeanne Schaffner, Safety & Risk Manager for Springs, presented Ms. Quinton with an “I’m a Lifesaver” Lego brick in recognition of her actions.
Springs has a Safety Recognition Program, Ms. Schaffner explained, so that upon hire all staff receive a base and a Springs brick. For every safety-related training or accomplishment, they earn a brick building their desktop Safety Monument that complements Springs’ motto, “Building a Culture of Safety.” When she learned of Ms. Quinton’s life-saving efforts, Ms. Schaffner awarded her a “I’m a Life Saver” brick.
In April, the California Charter Schools Association recognized Springs for its efforts in keeping students safe with a $2,500 grant for its Building a Culture of Safety program.
