Seth Blynn, 16, a sophomore with Springs’ Magnolia Student Center’s Renaissance Real World Academy, has been named an Eagle Scout. To earn the award, the Jurupa Valley resident led a team of youth and adults in refurbishing the flagpole at historic Marcy Library, now home to the Foster Army Animal Rescue Thrift Store.
He chose the project, he said, because the Foster Army was moving into the site and the flag had not flown for eight years. The Foster Army not only rescues animals, but provides support to American veterans.
“The flagpole was rusted and needed new parts,” Seth said. “Now [that the flagpole has been refurbished] the American flag is flown 24 hours a day.”
Seth joined the Cub Scouts at age 6, when he was in the 1st grade. He was attracted to the program, he said, because he enjoys the outdoors and “going on adventures.” He continued, “I’ve never been an indoor kind of kid. Anything outdoors, camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, scuba diving, kayaking and camp cooking, are all things I enjoy.”
Past achievements have included backpacking 74 miles to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite. He has also been trained in CPR and scuba diving.
Seth likes the Renaissance Real World Academy because it allows him the flexibility of completing assignments at his own pace. He continued, “I also like that my teachers allow me to choose the media when submitting projects. They don’t always need to be reports or on a project board, they allow me to personalize to fit my mood and personality.”
In addition to scouting, Seth is also a Riverside Fire Explorer and enjoys cooking. After he finishes school, he plans on becoming a paramedic.
