Pablo Ramirez and sister Alexia were members of the inaugural class at the La Fuente Student Center in Oceanside.
Serving grades TK-5, the new Springs center is a dual language program in which students learn in English and Spanish with an emphasis on family involvement. Although they’ve found the program challenging, it’s also been a wonderful fit for their educational needs. Pablo said, “We love our school. We never want to miss a day. We get upset when my parents plan vacations if it means we’ll miss school.”
La Fuente is beginning its second school year. It incorporates learning through activities, such as cooking Latin dishes and Salsa dancing. The students also take many local field trips; one trip, for example, was a visit to the Hobie watercraft factory.
Pablo is beginning the 3rd grade. His favorite subject is math. His family owns an ice cream business, and when he grows up he wants to be a business owner as well. His mother, Rosy, said, “Pablo enjoys feeling like a boss already, but he knows he has lots to learn.”
Rosy said the family chose the school because she and her husband wanted their children to be fluent in both English and Spanish. She noted that Pablo and Alexia have been able to show leadership in the classroom by teaching their classmates Spanish. Pablo explained, “We have had the chance to feel like pros and help friends with something that is foreign to them.”
