Ireland Porter-Olson, 13, lives in Indio. She is an 8th grader in the Homeschool program, and has been attending Springs for five years.
She likes the Homeschool program, she said, because it gives her the freedom to participate in Desert Valley Creative Learning Collaborative (DVCLC) classes such as robotics, writing, finance, scrapbooking, ultimate frisbee, yearbook, anatomy, high school support class, light saber, and public speaking. She explained, “With the homeschool program I have had the opportunity to participate in real world situations where I have gained administrative and organizational skills.”
Her favorite subject is math. She is taking both math 1 and Spanish 1 for high school credit. Last semester, she earned an A+ in math and an A in Spanish. She serves as president of the ASB club at DVCLC, engaging in such activities as selling pizza and snacks at lunch, and planning such fun activities as middle school dances. She is a lead student at DVCLC, she said, acting as a role model for younger students, and helping with other activities there. She said, “I am always willing to help others and I excel in the assignments given to me.”
Outside of school, she enjoys rollerblading, reading, hanging out with friends, riding quads, and horseback riding. When she grows up, she would like to have a career in business and marketing.
