An overview of Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504”) is a federal law, which prohibits discrimination against students with a disability. It states, “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability …, shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance….” Because River Springs Charter Schools is a recipient of federal funding, it is required to provide eligible disabled students with equal access to services, programs, and activities offered by its schools.

It is important that a school protocol be implemented in order to ensure that staff understands the school’s responsibility when making referrals to students and parents to community social service agencies. In general, SCS should refrain from initiating a referral to any outside agency.
