Throughout November and December, all Springs sites and programs are invited to participate in Springs’ Regional Preliminary Spelling Bees. Winners from each program or academy earn the opportunity to advance to the All-School Spelling Bee in January—a showdown where the strongest Springs spellers compete for a chance to move on to their local county competition.

Springs’ Otay Ranch Academy for the Arts (ORAA) teacher Jeannette Fetterhoff created a life-sized Zuri zebra mascot for the school. She researched zebras before beginning, then created it with such materials as cardboard, aluminum foil, and paper mâché. She painted it with rainbow stripes and put it on a platform with astroturf and presented it to Principal Brynne Dukes.

Springs’ Otay Ranch Academy for the Arts (ORAA) held an arts festival and ribbon cutting for its new site, reported Principal Brynne Dukes. They day showcased student visual arts and drumming, she said, and families also enjoyed karaoke, games, an opportunity raffle, and tours of the site.

The Otay Ranch Student Center began its year with 502 students, reported Principal Brynne Dukes. Eleven new staff members were brought on board as well. The school kicked off the year with classes engaging in orientation and team-building activities.

The Otay Ranch Student Center will soon be moving into a new site at 2371 Fenton Street in Chula Vista, reported Brynne Dukes, principal. As Springs will own the site, she said, the school will “have the autonomy on when and how we do events and how we organize everything.”

Sisters Olivia and Grace Clements of Chula Vista are the December Student Artists of the Month. Olivia is in the 5th grade and Grace the 1st grade at Springs’ Otay Ranch Academy of the Arts (ORAA). Their artwork is entitled “The Final Foodtier.” The sisters explained, “We wanted to build the solar system and then thought it would be fun to do it with food. We spent a lot of time finding different food items that would be the right shape and colors.”

Springs’ Otay Ranch Academy for the Arts (ORAA) finished off its 9th year with “fun and celebrations,” reported Melissa Maguire, vice principal. Eighth graders took a field trip to Fort Cross, where they worked on their team building and outdoor education. Second graders had a Movie Night with their families watching The Super Mario Bros. movie.
