Bear River Student Center celebrated Valentine’s week with a special Kindness Week celebration, reported Site Facilitator Gabbie Brooks. Students participated by writing thoughtful letters to staff and classmates and adding hearts to the school’s Kindness Tree. Gabbie said, “It was a wonderful experience, and we loved seeing so many students spreading kindness throughout the school.”

Springs’ Bear River Student Center welcomed new staff and saw other staff members step into new roles. These include Valerie Sasser, front office receptionist, Leslye Duong, attendance clerk, Juan Espinoza, 3rd grade teacher, Samantha Velasco, middle school history teacher, Anita Felix, revolving substitute, and Jose Hernandez, 4th grade ACE.

Throughout November and December, all Springs sites and programs are invited to participate in Springs’ Regional Preliminary Spelling Bees. Winners from each program or academy earn the opportunity to advance to the All-School Spelling Bee in January—a showdown where the strongest Springs spellers compete for a chance to move on to their local county competition.

Springs’ Bear River Student Center held its inaugural Multi-Cultural Arts Fair and Open House, reported Rosie Solis, site facilitator. The event highlighted “a vibrant blend of visual, performing, and culinary arts, showcasing cultural expressions from around the world.”

Thirty students from Springs’ regional academies and programs participated in the Springs All School Spelling Bee Invitational in Temecula. There were 13 rounds; the final round featured 8th graders Profess Adhikari from the Bear River Student Center and Kat Odell from Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center attempting to spell the winning word, curmudgeon. Profess prevailed.

Bear River Student Center Principal Renee Gooding and Special Education teacher Paul Aguirre dressed as Mrs. Claus and Santa Claus as part of a holiday performance performed by the students’ theater group. Families had the opportunity to enjoy carols sung by students and take a photo with the pair.

Springs’ Bear River Student Center held a Balloons Over Bear River parade (based on Melissa Sweet’s story about creating giant balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade entitled “Balloons Over Broadway”) in which students design and build balloons using the engineering design process. The parade included a visit from Mrs. Santa Claus.

Renee Gooding is the new Bear River Student Center principal. Renee is a graduate of Cal State University San Marcos who began her teaching career in private school where she taught first grade for many years before coming to Springs.
