Students from Springs’ Del Rio Student Center enjoyed a field trip to the Western Science Center, a natural history museum in Hemet. They learned about Ice Age giants such as the mastodon, made their way through recreations of an 80 million-year-old Cretaceous forest, studied dinosaur fossils, were introduced to a typical 1880s house from the Diamond Valley region and much more.

The Springs’ Del Rio Student Center, which serves 155 students in grades TK-8, is undergoing a renovation. The church from which the Center rents space is undergoing a “massive facelift,” said Principal Shawna Lewis. Components of the renovation include new paint, repairs, and updates.

Shawna Lewis, principal of Springs’ Del Rio and Palm Academy Student Centers, reported that the Del Rio site enjoyed a Harvest Festival with staff dressing up as Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, and students enjoying arts & crafts, face painting, pie the principal and more (pictured are Darlene Blackman and Shawna Lewis). They also celebrated Indigenous People’s Month with presentations by two local tribal leaders to middle school students.

For the 4th year in a row, Del Rio Student Center 7th grade student Zuri Honore, 12, of Lake Elsinore raised funds and prepared meals to feed a Christmas meal to dozens of people currently experiencing homelessness. He started work with the homeless after visiting Los Angeles and seeing large numbers of homeless on the street. He recalled, “It was sad to see. I think it’s important that we treat them as well as anyone else.”

Darla Ruiz was recognized as Springs’ Palm Academy Artist of the Month for September for her drawing of a real-life hero at the school’s monthly Palm Pechanga event, reported Principal Shawna Lewis. Additionally, Levi Jove, Kai Jove, Genesis Zazueta and Leland Hodges were named as the Palm Academy Desert Foxes of the Month for exhibiting Springs Graduate Learner Outcomes.
