Students at Springs’ new Del Rio Student Center are planning the planting of a new community garden. It will be planted on an empty space on the grounds, said Principal Shawna Lewis, in an area “perfect for a garden.”
Middle school students, including Alfredo Nieves (pictured), are taking the lead designing the garden, and writing area businesses to request donations of plants and materials. Mrs. Lewis anticipates the garden will be in place by spring, with fruits and vegetables ready for harvest by next fall. A friendship bench and decorative rocks will be part of the garden.
Del Rio began its inaugural year in August, with 95 students grades TK-8.
