Springs ES Laura Gottdiner shared the following story with Superintendent Kathleen Hermsmeyer about her adopted son, Tim, a 7th-grade student at Springs’ Riverside Learning Center:
“My son, Tim, goes to the Riverside Learning Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He’s in 7th grade… We decided to enroll him in Speaker’s League this year to help him overcome his fear of public speaking.
His first speech was rough as he froze up in front of the class. A student (his cousin) suggested that the class ask questions about his topic, and he was able to answer them confidently. The teacher, Mrs. Woodruff, emailed me to let me know how proud she was.
… Tim had another speech to present, and he was both excited for the challenge and nervous. He froze up initially again, but another student suggested that they all go under their tables, so he wouldn’t have to see them looking at him. He confidently presented his speech, and the class gave him the “Best Speaker” award.
When I picked him up, Mrs. Woodruff saw me and told him to tell me what happened. She was so proud and excited for him! I am just so very grateful that Tim can be in a school that thinks outside the box and is as supportive as River Springs. Middle school can be a grueling experience for many kids, especially if they are shy or have challenges. Tim regularly tells me how much he loves going to school!
So… thanks for your vision that you have always pursued for our school. I’ve been with the school for 16+ years, and you have been an amazing leader who has never given up on creativity and individuality as high priorities for our students. I’m so happy for the alternative that we have with Springs for Tim.”
Superintendent Hermsmeyer responded, “Thank you so much for sharing! We have such amazing staff and students. I appreciate the kind words and the story. This is an illustration of the heart of our mission. We need all kids to belong. It’s clear Tim’s teacher Mrs. Woodruff has created a caring environment for all the kids. It makes my year happy to hear!”
