Nichol Regalado, a 7th grade ELA/History Academy teacher at Magnolia Student Center, has had great success using DonorsChoose to fundraise for things she needs in the classroom. Springs’ Corona Student Center has launched monthly online Corona Coyote meetings with the principal, E.J. Whitehead, and the student’s grades K-8. In the first meeting in January, students reflected on the past semester and discussed what they were looking forward to in the upcoming semester. In February, a special guest will discuss physical activity programs available during the pandemic.

Parsec Cloud, Inc. is making their Parsec for Teams software available for free to schools for the 2020-21 school year. The software facilitates remote teaching of graphics-heavy subjects by providing an optimal connection between the school’s computers and remote students at home, regardless of their hardware. It normally costs users $30/month, but an epic MegaGrant will cover the cost.

Springs’ Renaissance Valley Academy (RVA) has begun a math collaboration effort between elementary and middle/high school students to identify and target missing math skills with the goal of increasing math proficiency across the grade levels. The Magnolia Student Center held a Riverside Family Scavenger Hunt so that students could learn the history of the City of Riverside. Families were asked to visit sites around the city and take selfies at the site; sites included 1911 Fairmount Park, 1903 Victoria Club, 1920s Benedict Castle, 1870s Evergreen Cemetery, and 1904 Riverside County Courthouse. Joseph Greene, 18, a senior at Springs’ Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy who lives in Riverside, is a gifted classical music composer and performer. He has been offered a music scholarship and a trustee merit scholarship for $14,500 from California Baptist University (CBU)—although he has not committed to going to the school—and has taken three music classes through Springs, excelling in each one. Joseph has attended Springs schools since 3rd grade and maintains a 4.08 GPA.

For the 4th year in a row, Del Rio Student Center 7th grade student Zuri Honore, 12, of Lake Elsinore raised funds and prepared meals to feed a Christmas meal to dozens of people currently experiencing homelessness. He started work with the homeless after visiting Los Angeles and seeing large numbers of homeless on the street. He recalled, “It was sad to see. I think it’s important that we treat them as well as anyone else.”
