High School Learning Center Studies AVID Strategies for the Classroom

Springs’ High School Learning Center teachers participated in a two-day AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) workshop entitled “Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms,” reported Homeschool Director Sherri Kemp. AVID strategies help engage students and enhance learning in the classroom.

The intensive workshop focused on a variety of teaching strategies for all content areas to deepen the learning for students and engage them in high-level thinking. English teacher Marissa Nelson commented, “The AVID strategies that I have learned help enhance my teaching by allowing my students to work collaboratively to understand diverse and rigorous texts better. The AVID strategies also help push me as an educator to research and learn new techniques that will be beneficial for my students and their specific needs.”

This is the third year that the High School Learning Center has partnered with the Riverside County Office of Education’s AVID Department to support Springs’ work in creating optimal learning environments, Sherri noted, ensuring that Springs Homeschool High School students are ready for college and career.
