Fifty TK-8 homeschool students and their families enjoyed a visiting tide pool experience at Springs’ Del Rio Student Center, reported Jessica Rapoport, Homeschool Collaborative Teacher. They were able to see and touch a wide range of sea animals, including a shark, horseshoe crab, sea star, sea snails, and stingray. They were also able to touch shells and scuba diving equipment.
Students have been studying oceanography throughout the year, so the event was a “culminating activity,” reported Jessica. Their studies stressed the importance of conservation of the ocean environment and being good stewards of the ocean, beaches, and their inhabitants. She was surprised to learn “how many students said they had never been to the tide pools down at the beach or even to the beach at all.”
The tide pool experience was held during Del Rio’s open house, Jessica added, “so many new people got to see our learning center and the wonderful program that we have here at Del Rio. It was a huge success and all the parents were so appreciative.”
The event was sponsored through a grant from the PSB Charitable Foundation, Inc.
