Lauren Zike, a 5th/6th grade academy teacher at Springs’ Corona Student Center, has begun live-directed drawing sessions with her students via Zoom during this time when on-site classroom learning has been suspended due to COVID-19.
Students are not required to participate, but participation is encouraged. The purpose of the drawing sessions, Ms. Zike explained, is for teachers and students to connect and maintain a sense of classroom community without being in the physical classroom. She reported, “I feel like it has been a big success! It’s been really great so far!”
She is drawing 10 to 15 students per session, with siblings and parents and students from other classes joining in, too. Sessions are held twice weekly, with drawing subjects being selected by students. Students also use the time to share about what’s going on at home, and ask questions about school work.
