Springs’ Cherry Valley Student Center began its school year with RAD (Reduce Anxiety and Depression) Week, reported Principal Tammy Slaten, “by encouraging our students to develop on a social-emotional level prior to the start of the curriculum. We realize students need to feel a sense of belonging before they can focus academically and we take pride in our RAD Week and the amazing community it brings.”
There were activities for each grade level. In the 2nd and 3rd grade, for example, “students learned the importance of sharing their ideas and listening to friends while they share theirs. Each group had the opportunity to work with different students each time to learn how to effectively communicate, share, problem solve, and use critical thinking skills.”
The 4th and 5th grade “learned how to be focused on learning and bonding with each other.”
The 7th and 8th grades met and answered questions such as “If you had a superpower, what would it be?” “Who do you live with, and what pets do you have?” and “What is your favorite part about school?” Tammy continued, “They learned about our circle of control, what they can control and what they can’t control.”
