Springs’ Cherry Valley Homeschool Cooperative’s first ever Cultural Studies Week was a success, reported Principal Tammy Slaten. Students learned about different cultures and shared information by creating display boards which fellow students and staff members viewed during a Thursday Cultural Studies Display Day.
One second grader, Ms. Slaten reported, wanted to visit Kenya with her family. She said, “When my dad retires, I will ask him to take me to Kenya.” Another group of students studying China couldn’t believe that Chinese parents were only allow a single child. Ms. Slaten said, “They discussed how life would be different without their siblings. This fact seemed unreal to so many of them.”
Some of the older students wanted more time to study their favorite cultures, which prompted the school to begin planning for a larger Cultural Studies Week in the next school year. Ms. Slaten concluded, “We already have teachers brainstorming ways we can enhance this event for the next school year.”
