Eight Springs students participated in the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair at the Riverside Convention Center, reported Nikkole McAdoo, events and community engagement coordinator.
Overall, 530 students from 30 affiliate fairs presenting 367 projects across 22 subject categories—ranging from behavioral and social sciences to translational medical science—were part of the event.
Winners included Kiyara Gunawardena (6th grade, iShine) for her project Exploring Coral Reefs. Also, Naomi McAllister (7th grade, Magnolia) for her project Dexterity Doppelgänger. Naomi designed and constructed a functional forearm and hand prosthetic utilizing touch sensors and motors. Both will advance to the statewide competition.
Other winners included Hazelyn Nuñez and Abigail Moore (8th grade, Bear River) for their project What Color Bowls Do Chickens Prefer? And Gabriel Sosa (6th grade, Magnolia) was recognized for his project Land vs. Water Fossils. These students have the opportunity to compete for an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for finals week this October.
