Marcellus Benton, a graduating senior with the Lake Elsinore KEYS program, volunteers at the Veteran’s Supplemental Support Network (VSSN), an organization that assists military and veteran families.
His mother, Daisy, is the organization’s executive director and his father served in the military and was deployed to war and high-risk zones for over 60% of Marcellus’ life.
Marcellus’ activities with VSSN include distribution of food and emergency items to veteran families who faced hardship, assisting with community events and helping with online resources.
The Murrieta resident is moving on to study software development/engineering with a focus on gaming at Cal State University San Marcos. He said, “I plan to work with a software development team on either games or entertainment applications.”
He’s grateful for his education with KEYS, he said, because the program worked better than a traditional public school program because “I had more academic support from Ms. (Ellen) Minor my educational specialist and the school staff took strong interest in my success.”
His interests include reading, video games, Dragon Ball Z/anime, and comics. He also noted that he is a committed Christian.
