Springs’ Bear River Student Center held its annual practice of reading the book “Stone Soup” by Vice Principal Renee Gooding to students one class at a time. Each grade level then contributes a canned ingredient which is made into soup to be enjoyed with families during a picnic lunch.

Springs Homeschool students gathered at the Temecula Event Center for a Reading Extravaganza, reported Nikki McAdoo, events and community engagement coordinator. Students were invited to dress up as their favorite storybook character. Younger students created Rainbow Fish Playdough and went deep sea “site word fishing,” while older students played Parts of Speech Jenga and participated in a life-sized vocabulary board game. All students shared their cereal box book reports and participated in a Reader’s Theater rotation. At the end of the day, students held a storybook parade. Continue reading →
Taking Such Classes Can Be a Benefit to Students, Says Director of High School Programs
Beverly Voechting, Springs’ director of high school programs, reports that there has been a “huge” increase in the number of college courses taken by Springs high school students this school year. Last year, Springs High School students took 135 classes online from Barstow Community College as compared to 425 in the present year. Eighty-one percent of Springs students pass their classes, as compared to 75% of college-aged students.

Springs’ Temecula Student Center celebrated Kindness Week by spreading “kindness and positivity throughout our campus and community,” reported Principal Valerie Walker. She continued, “It was heartwarming watching students participate in activities all week long that celebrated and promoted kindness.”

Springs held three school-wide competitions in this past month. On January 11, Springs held its History Day Competition and Science Fair Invitational, and on January 17, Springs held its Spelling Bee Invitational.

Julian Tsai, a 12th grade student with Springs’ Journey Homeschool High School, daily practices Kendo, a Japanese martial art that uses bamboo swords and protective armor, and believes the skills he has learned with it help him in everyday life. In February, he competed in the Mori Hai Tournament in Fountain Valley and earned third place. When he’s not practicing Kendo he’s playing the shamisen, a three-stringed Japanese instrument that can be a challenge to play.

Recent trips for students of Springs Virtual Village (Montessori Voyage and Virtual Academy) include a Winter Wonderland Park Day at Los Serranos Park in Chino Hills and a visit to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. Students created ornaments at the park, and were given books to take home and read. At the museum, students learned about dinosaurs and viewed native gardens.

Fatima Ruzmetova, 11, a 5th grade Homeschool student, is the March 2024 Student Artist of the Month. Her artwork is entitled “Galaxy Awesome.” Fatima lives in Riverside. She enjoys being homeschooled because she doesn’t have to rise early for school “yet I still receive the best education.”

Field trips can greatly enhance a child’s education, believes Carmelina Rosales, Springs’ Education Field Trip Coordinator. Recent field trips include a visit to PennyPickle’s Workshop in Temecula (pictured), a children’s museum with hands-on inventions, gadgets, and experiments, which drew 101 participants.
