History Day, Science & Engineering Fair, Spelling Bee
More than 50 students and their families gathered at the Temecula Event Center for the All-School History Day & Science & Engineering Fair showcasing outstanding projects from across all Springs sites and programs. The winning students have the opportunity to advance to county and state-level competitions.
The National History Day theme was “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History”; 21 students presented projects. The winning students who will advance to Riverside County History Day on March 14 are:
Elementary Division (4th-5th)
- 1st Place: Caden Wilhite (Homeschool) – Genghis Khan: Revolution in China
- 2nd: Jackalynn Maldonado (Homeschool) – Alexander Hamilton
- 3rd: Greyson Arden (Homeschool) – Robin Hood
Junior Division (6th-8th)
- 1st Place: Mia Solorio (Riverside Student Center) – Johannes Gutenberg
- 2nd: Mercy Wilhite (Homeschool) – The Council of Nicaea
- 3rd: Carsten Chu, Karissa Chu & Shilo Aranda (Corona Student Center) – Revolution, Reaction & Reform
Senior Division (9th-12)
- 1st Place: Evangeline Jensen (Journey) – Mexican Repatriation: The Forgotten Citizens
- 2nd: Isabella Valenzuela (Journey) – Hip Hop Music
The Science & Engineering Fair featured 28 students presenting 23 individual and group projects. The winning students are:
Elementary Division (Grades 4–5)
- 1st Place: Lucas Galvez (Montessori Voyage) – Does Altitude Affect Gravity?
- 2nd: AnnaBella Acevedo-Xiong (Homeschool) – Natural Remedies
- 3rd: Nyle & Nathan Lutz (Empire Homeschool) – Comparing Dinosaur Footprints
Junior Division (Grades 6–8)
- Tied for 1st Place:
- Gabriel Sosa (Magnolia Student Center) – Land vs. Fossils
- Abigail Moore & Hazelyn Nunez – What Color Bowls Do Chickens Prefer?
- 2nd: Jack Hitchcock (Magnolia Student Center) – Battle of the Drumsticks
- 3rd: Autumn Rehaume & Lexi Corio (Bear River Student Center) – How Does A.I. Affect Our World?
Senior Division (Grades 9–12)
- 1st Place: Justin Merino (Magnolia Student Center) – Vitamin Better Bites
Engineering Fair – Junior Division
- 1st Place: Kiyara Gunawardena (i-Shine Student Center) – Exploring Coral Reefs
- 2nd: Naomi McAllister (Magnolia Student Center) – Unlimited Prosthetics
- 3rd: Gabriella Clary (Bear River Student Center) – Hydraulic Arm
Seven projects will be selected to compete at the Riverside County Science Fair on February 27.

We also held our Springs All-School Spelling Bee Invitational for grades 4-8 on January 21. Thirty-two spellers from various sites and programs participated.
After 18 rounds, Harper Lovato, 7th grade, Magnolia Academy took first by spelling narcoleptic. Harper will represent Springs at the Riverside County Spelling Bee in March. Karissa Chu, 8th grade, Corona Student Center, will serve as alternate.
For the Inland Empire, Jake Odell and Sebastian Cortez came out on top and will represent Empire Springs at the San Bernardino County Spelling Bee.
