As a child growing up on her parent’s ranch in the high desert of Southern California, Rachel learned the value of strong work ethic, teamwork, and quality education. The theme of learning through personal experience was further instilled while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and living into the motto ‘learn by doing.’ Upon graduation, Rachel was hired as a middle school and high school teacher at a private school. Soon, Rachel discovered that she (and her students) would benefit from more training and pursued her teaching credential. After earning a single subject teaching credential, Rachel taught in the traditional public-school setting until she became aware of an opportunity to teach and collaborate with colleagues at Springs’ public charter school. The importance placed on community as the classroom and personalized learning appealed to Rachel as a model that works. Ever intrigued and motivated by doing what works, she devoted herself to finding creative ways to provide quality experiences for students and emphasized a culture of inclusivity and belonging. A life-long student herself, Rachel returned to university to pursue her masters degree in counseling psychology, believing that a foundation of mental health and well-being significantly improves learning. Rachel is honored to serve on the board for Springs Charter School where she can witness first-hand how Springs’ students benefit from quality, heartfelt educational experiences and become contributing members of society.
