Whitewater Preserve

Whitewater Preserve is 2,851 acres surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management’s San Gorgonio Wilderness and includes the year-round Whitewater River. Rich riparian habitat hosts the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher and least Bell’s vireo and provides an opportunity to see migrating summer tanagers and vermilion flycatchers. The canyon has a robust population of bighorn sheep, deer, and bears, and is an important wildlife corridor between the San Bernardino and the San Jacinto Mountains.

Let’s explore the canyon as an ecosystem at the edge of the mountains and the desert. We will see organisms that adapt to desert conditions and some that require more water. We will study the changes that affect the canyon and how those changes affect the organisms that live there – from sheep to frogs. This program begins to examine how humans affect the environment and potential hazards humans try to mitigate.

This 3-hour guided educational journey begins when your student steps outdoors and begins to wonder and think far beyond the textbook. Nature holds a mirror to our human sympathies—reflecting the kind, just, and loving qualities that elevate the human mind. After a quality outdoor learning experience, children return home with a new understanding and unforgettable memory of their place in the world.

The program includes an introduction, walk/activities, and ends with an option to enjoy your lunch at the picnic area.
