Seth Blynn of Jurupa Valley, a 14-year-old 8th grade student with Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy (going into 9th grade with the Magnolia Student Center in the fall), goes scuba diving near Catalina 37 feet below the surface. He said of the experience, “I had the best time ever and can’t wait to do it again.” Seth earned his scuba diving certificate for open water certification enabling him to scuba dive in both U.S. and international waters. Seth first became involved in scuba when his Boy Scout crew voted to take classes and earn the scuba merit badge. He took a liking to scuba, he said, because “I like seeing all the fish and the underwater life.”
To earn his certificate, Seth had to both study in the classroom and practice in a pool. He said, “You have to prove to the instructor that you can clear your mask and know the hand signals. If we run out of air, we have to know how to exchange the air mouthpiece [with a diving buddy] underwater.”
Seth’s next big dive trip is one he’s planning next year to Mexico. Besides diving, Seth enjoys mountain biking, white water rafting, hiking, backpacking and camping. He is also a Life Scout in Boy Scouts and will soon start his Eagle project.
Seth chose Springs, he said, because he can learn at his own pace, do his assignments online and email his teachers with questions.
