The Del Rio Student Center Leadership Club took a volunteer field trip to the Animal Savior Sanctuary in Perris, reported teacher Claudia McGinty. The students had the opportunity to interact with animals that had been rescued from difficult situations, including dogs, pigs, geese, goats, miniature horses, and donkeys.

The Del Rio Student Center welcomed the Western Science Center Mobile Science Lab, shared Principal Kim Ballantyne-Morse. Students in grades 1-5 had the “hands-on” opportunity to explore fossils of extinct animals that once inhabited the region, as well as non-extinct animals and plants.

Students at the Del Rio Student Center are learning about the Elements of Art, focusing on “line” and “shape”, reported teacher Monica Peralta. TK and K worked on making different kinds of lines. First and 2nd used geometric shapes to create their own robot. Third through 5th learned about using lines to add texture to their drawings of animals and began using foreground, middle ground, and background. Sixth through 8th used organic shapes to create fold-out landscapes with foreground, middle ground, and background.

Students from teacher Claudia McGinty’s 6th-grade class learned about the September 11th attacks, reported Principal Kim Ballantyne-Morse. They listened to testimonies of survivors and participated in a gallery walk created by the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Springs’ Del Rio Student Center has a new art teacher, Mrs. Butler. Students have begun attending a weekly art class; in the new school year, students will have more opportunities to learn about art and music as more elective options will be available to them.

Fifty TK-8 homeschool students and their families enjoyed a visiting tide pool experience at Springs’ Del Rio Student Center, reported Jessica Rapoport, Homeschool Collaborative Teacher. They were able to see and touch a wide range of sea animals, including a shark, horseshoe crab, sea star, sea snails, and stingray. They were also able to touch shells and scuba diving equipment.

In Springs’ Del Rio Student Center’s recent science lessons with it PS Science Lab, students “embarked on an exciting hands-on project to explore the delicate balance of Earth’s ecosystems,” reported Principal Kim Ballantyne-Morse. They worked together to create their own mini-ecosystems, where they could observe and study the interactions between living and non-living components of nature.

TK and kindergarten students at Springs’ Del Rio Student Center celebrated the 100th day of school with their annual 100th Day Fashion Show, reported Principal Kim Ballantyne-Morse. Students decorated shirts with 100 items of their choice, including coins, plastic bugs, Lego pieces, jewels, and flowers.
