Journey Homeschool student Gavin Hickling is the lead guitarist for the band Xpired, shared Vice Principal Nicole Collins. Xpired is known for its eclectic sound, blending rock, Latin, and funk influences.
Gavin began playing at age 8, inspired by the music of such groups as AC/DC and Van Helen. He joined Xpired at the suggestion of a former teacher.
Gavin practices twice weekly. He enjoys performing for audiences, Nicole said: “Whether it is seeing a crowd dance or finally mastering a difficult guitar riff, the experience keeps him motivated.”
Some of Xpired’s most notable performances, Nicole said, include one at the Mission Inn Festival of Lights during which “the band managed to get the entire block line dancing, turning the event into a lively celebration.”
Gavin is grateful for the Journey Homeschool program, as it allows him the flexibility to practice and perform while keeping up with school. In the future, he plans to write and perform his own original music. He’d also like to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
