The Winter Guard RVA Royals have completed their first season, reported Anick Mejia, academy teacher and admin designee. The Winter Guard, Anick explained, is not a cheerleading team, but “a visual performance team that uses flags, movement, and choreography to interpret music. Unlike cheerleading, Winter Guard focuses on artistic expression and storytelling through movement and music.”
The team competed during the winter and early spring seasons and will expand next year to perform at RVA football games. The team has participated in two major performances, a high school Powder Puff Pep Rally and the Championship Competition at Great Oak High School in Temecula.
The team is led by coach Clara Spock, with assistance provided by supervising teachers Robin Felix and Erin Spock.
